Kip's Lecture: 1

This is my first class with Kip.  I heard him speak at the commencement ceremony in the fall and I could tell he cared about the students here.  This attitude was still apparent during Monday's lecture.  He showed some interesting slides and told some funny stories, but what stuck with me was this feeling that I wanted to push myself harder and further during the course of this specific quarter.  I had traces of this feeling even before the quarter began, but something in this lecture really solidified that decision for me.

I appreciated that Kip defined art by two requirements:

In order for something to be art,
  1. it has to be produced by some form of activity, as well as…
  2. convey meaning.
I liked two questions that were raised:
  • How does meaning occur?
  • How do we decide what’s important?
What is interesting to me is that these questions do not have to be restricted to an art context.  I find myself asking this question about nearly everything in my life.  It is these questions that frame every decision ever made.
Based on the first lecture, I can tell that this class will be an important one for me to not only grow as an artist but also grow within myself.  I realize that I am sort of combining this writing with the "hopes and fears" prompt, but I am constantly re-evaluating my stance on the future, especially while attending particularly interesting lectures.  I can tell that I will learn a lot in this particular class, mostly because I know that I care about this subject.
