Reader: Week 1

Upon coming to UCSB, I had not been widely exposed to many actually contemporary types of art being created around the world in my lifetime.  I had always been schooled in the classics, both in art history as well as art practice.  The concept of art and technology fusing together to become its own entity is a new idea for me and really fascinates me.  This introduction chapter has excited me to the many possibilities that are still out there for artists to explore; we are not immediately subjected to the fine arts anymore.  There is media and computer arts, dance, performance, any combination of these and so much more out there to investigate.  Unfortunately, I did not accept these ideals so quickly upon learning about them.  I feel like I'm looking back on myself as a stubborn old lady.  I would barely even accept photography as a legitimate source of art making.  But I am now really excited about these developments and am anxious to utilize them as much as I can and be a part of creating new forms of art.
I believe that we have only scratched the surface of the new possibilities that await for artists and people as a whole since the birth of computer technology.  Things and ideas are evolving so fast and one can only imagine how much can develop even in our own lifetimes.
